About the Canadian Water Network Foundation

Securing Canada’s water future

Who we are

The Canadian Water Network Foundation (CWN Foundation) was established as a Canadian registered charity in 2025. The Foundation raises philanthropic funds to support education, applied research, leadership development, and collaborative initiatives that strengthen water management in Canada.

The Foundation exists to complement, not duplicate, existing efforts in the water sector. It also aims to help position Canada as a global leader in water management for public benefit.

Relationship with Canadian Water Network

The CWN Foundation works closely with the Canadian Water Network (CWN), a national non-profit organization that empowers communities and sectors to tackle Canada’s most urgent water challenges. Through this relationship, the Foundation leverages CWN’s administrative capacity, expertise, and national partnerships to maximize impact.

Indigenous Water Management Advisory Committee

The Foundation’s Indigenous water initiatives are co-developed with Indigenous-led organizations and knowledge holders, from early concept and priority-setting through design and implementation. This co-development work is supported by CWN’s Indigenous Water Management Advisory Committee, which plays an ongoing role in shaping priorities, program design, and approaches to partnership.

This work is grounded in principles of Indigenous leadership, respect for Indigenous knowledge systems, Indigenous data sovereignty, and long-term, trust-based relationships. We recognize that effective and sustainable water solutions must be Indigenous-led and community-defined.

The Committee is composed of Indigenous leaders and knowledge holders with expertise in water management, governance, and community priorities. Advisory input supports the Foundation’s commitment to Indigenous-led and co-developed initiatives and to respectful, long-term relationships.
